MARSHALL, Ill. — Harry F. Baker, 97, of Marshall died at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2006, in Burnsides Nursing Home. He had a lengthy career in law enforcement, serving as a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Jim Turner, serving as Clark County sheriff from 1958 to 1962, serving a number of years as a Marshall police officer and the chief of police and also serving as Clark County animal control warden for 10 years.

He was born April 18, 1909, in Spiketown, Marshall Township, Clark County to Frank Baker and Alzenia Snyder Baker. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Martin Baker, whom he married in 1951; one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Betty Baker of Marshall; one granddaughter, Carmen Moore of Indianapolis; one great-grandson, James L. Moore, stationed in Iraq; a special friend, Lillian Hurt of Marshall; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Riley Baker, Michael Baker, Lloyd Baker and Daniel Baker in infancy; and three sisters, Alice Reedy, Mildred Cribelar and Ada McNary.

He was a retired farmer and was an avid coon hunter. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of both Marshall American Legion Post 90 and Marshall Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5975.

Private family visitation and services are Friday in Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union. Burial is in Livingston Cemetery, east of Marshall.
