James Ellis Allen, 87, of Magnolia, died Nov. 5, 2010, at Aston Court Retirement Center.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home in McComb and continues there 10 a.m. Monday until services at 11. Dr. Leroy Stringfield and Dr. David Millican will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in Felix Allen Cemetery.
Mr. Allen was born Nov. 20, 1922 in Magnolia. He was the son of William P. and Estelle Bearden Allen.
He was former co-owner and manager of Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. of McComb. He was a longtime member of Bala Chitto Baptist Church, where he was very active before his health began to decline.
Mr. Allen was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was one of the five Allen brothers to serve at the same time during World War II. During the war, he fought in every major battle in the Pacific. After retiring from the soft drink business, he became involved in farming, and he loved to work with his tractor and raise cattle.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys Varnado Allen; three brothers, Lloyd, Glen and Ray Allen.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Randall and Karen Allen, and Malcolm Allen, Derrel and Beth Allen and Kristi and Don Alford, all of McComb, and Judy and Mike Thompson of Magnolia; one brother and sister-in-law, Lee and Mary Allen of Magnolia; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gaylon and Linda Varnado of McComb; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Varnado of Arkansas and Peggy Allen of Easleyville, La.; eight grandchildren, Jay Allen, Cori Honea and husband Chris, Mat Thompson and wife Heather, Ben Thompson and wife Courtney, Andy, Hut and Claire Allen and Tina Diamond and husband Woodie; eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Jay Allen, Mat Thompson, Ben Thompson, Andy Allen, Hut Allen and Chris Honea. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews.
