ZANESVILLE - Frederick Wheeler Davis Jr., "Fred", 85, died Friday, July 11, 2008, at Genesis Hospice and Palliative Care.
Born Dec. 24, 1922 in Zanesville, he was a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Fred was a World War II veteran and served honorably in the Merchant Marines and the U.S. Army. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was a member for more than 50 years. He married Audrey Mae McDonald Davis Feb. 9, 1946, after his discharge from the U.S. Army, and they are proud parents of five children. After his marriage, he worked as a certified welder at McGraw Edison Co. in Zanesville for 27 years. He retired in 1987 as an engineer from Muskingum College in New Concord. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Frederick Wheeler Davis, Jackie Wayne Davis, Karen Ann Davis Tucker, and Audrey Mae Davis Markley; two sisters, Martha Jane Davis Beatty and Beverly Davis Blockson; seven grandchildren, Tisha Tucker Cash, Stephanie Markley, Brent Markley, Mathew Davis, Hope Davis, Samuel Davis and Aaron Davis, four great-grandchildren, Ireland Cash, Luke Davis, Griffin Davis, and Owen Davis; and his best friend and faithful companion, his dog named Josey.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Wheeler Frederick and Ruth Tignor Davis Sr., a daughter, Ellen Anetta Davis; siblings, George Davis, Franklin Davis, William Davis, Virginia Davis Powell, Helen Davis Ferguson, Bonnie Davis Hartman and Ruth Davis Smitley; a granddaughter, Stacey Davis; and a great-grandson Cooper Davis.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today, July 13, at DeLong-Baker & Lanning Funeral Home, 56 S. Fifth St.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 14, 2008, at the funeral home with Pastor Mark Combs officiating. Burial will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
