Newspaper Article (The West) 18 June 1952:

Accountant killed by zoo lion

Badly mauled, the body of a 36-year-old accountant was found in the lions' cage at the South Perth Zoo early today. A lion standing "guard" dragged the body several times around the den when keepers tried to recover it. The dead man was Alexander Lindsay Edmeades, 36, accountant of a Fremantle firm, to which he gave a week's notice yesterday , He was the father of three children.

Keepers used fire hoses and meat bait to lure the lion to the rear of the cage while the body of Edmeades was recovered.

Police believe that Edmeades climbed the 16ft high fence during the night despite heavy rain, dragmarks could be seen in the sand on the cage floor. An overcoat, with a small New Testament in one pocket, was found hanging on the safety fence, and a pair of shoes just inside it. There was only one lion in the cage. The others had been locked up for the night.

Fellow-workers said today that Edmeades smoked and gambled until three years ago, when he turned deeply religious, He preached at open-air meetings.

This is the second death in this lion's cage, but not by the same lion.

Other newspapers reported this as a suicide.
