Birth: Apr. 26, 1966
Harris County
Texas, USA
Death: Jul. 19, 2005
New Orleans
Orleans Parish
Louisiana, USA

Award-winning filmmaker and visual artist. Graduate of Clifton L. Ganus High School and the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, attended New York's Julliard summer program, the University of Southern California's Film School and later, Harvard University.

In 1991, Ms. Marcello made her debut as a writer and director with the film, "Maggie May," a tragic coming-of-age story set and shot in New Orleans. "Maggie May" caused a sensation within independent film circles winning top prizes at the 1991 New Orleans Film Festival, the America Film Institute (AFI) and the Tourage Award for best American independent film at the Avignon Film Festival in France, the same honor bestowed upon Quentin Tarantino the following year.

After "Maggie May," Ms. Marcello formed Blue Heart Cinema, a film production company. Blue Heart Cinema produced several documentaries and music videos for such New Orleans rap acts as Tim Smooth.

She never attempted another feature-length film project preferring painting and other artistic pursuits including the founding of Chimera, a cooperative art gallery in the New Orleans French Quarter. Ms. Marcello excelled at provocative portraits of nudes that seemingly took on a third dimension. Her work was recently exhibited in New York City and at the New Orleans W Hotel. She often donated paintings for auction to local charities and cultural organizations. Further accomplishments include vast commercial and residential property holdings she acquired through a joint business venture with her ex-husband including one of the leading video-poker franchises in Louisiana.

She will be remembered by all who knew her as a sweet, loving and generous person who touched many lives and cared dearly for her friends...and who loved an icey cold Diet Dr. Pepper. She felt especially happy when working to further the efforts of many New Orleans non-profit organizations including The Arc of Greater New Orleans, Bravo, Dollars for Scholars and many others. Marika loved traveling and adored visiting Italy. Her happiest time, however, was when she was in her studio painting together with her son, Enzo.

Survivors include her raison d'etre and muse, son Vincenzo Marcello born in 2001; his father, Vincent Marcello; her parents, James and Ruth Ann Pellerin-Menutis; her sister, writer and author Jamie Menutis; her niece, Ana Sofia Rosales; her brother, realtor Demitri Menutis; sister-in-law, Ashley Menutis; and niece, Isabella Menutis. Further survivors include a small circle of loving friends in which this writer was a proud and honored member.
