Beden Beabout (sometimes spelled Bebout)enlisted 22 Aug 1862 with a group of his neighbors, men of Amwell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He served as a Corporal, Co. D., 140th Pennsylvania Infantry. In the battle of The Wheatfield on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, he was mortally wounded - 2 Jul 1863. During the night, he was heard praying by a neighbor, Cephas Sharp, who recognized his voice. They spoke and dragged themselves near to one another. The next morning, they were discovered by Confederate soldiers, whom they paid to carry them to a place of safety, where they might receive care. By July 5th, they were in a barn owned by a Mr. Cunningham and it is assumed that is where Beden Beabout died.
