Thomas Kyle Baldwin died July 5, 2008, at Westminister Canterbury in Lynchburg. He was born March 21, 1918, to Frank Grayson Baldwin and Caroline Llewelyn Kyle of Farmville. He was educated at Farmville High School, graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1939 and attended the Wharton School of Business of the University of Pennsylvania in 1940.
In 1942, Mr. Baldwin was called to active duty and served in the U.S. Navy. Kyle was an executive officer on the PCE (Patrol Craft Escort)-874 escorting tankers between Philadelphia and Aruba, Trinidad and the Panama Canal. He became commanding officer of the PCY-144 for the remainder of the war. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve.
In 1946, Mr. Baldwin retired from active duty and moved to Farmville, beginning his business career with Baldwin's Stores, the company his grandfather founded in 1890. A lifetime member of Baldwin's Stores, Inc., Mr. Baldwin and his two brothers expanded the business from three locations to 23 stores in Virginia and North Carolina.
While at Hampden-Sydney, Mr. Baldwin was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and the "Seven and a Half" Honor Society. From 1967 to 1986, Mr. Baldwin served on the Hampden-Sydney Board of Trustees and endowed the Baldwin Family Scholarship in 2006, aiding in tuition cost for local Prince Edward County students.
A lifelong member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville, Baldwin served on the Vestry, as Senior Warden, a lay reader, sang in the choir and served on the Board of the Diocese of Southern Virginia.
Mr. Baldwin was an avid golfer having played on courses from Sea Island, Ga., to Scotland, Australia and New Zealand. He was a founding member of the Sea Island Golf Association and a member of the Fifty-five Golf Association and former member of the Three Score and Ten Golf Association.
A private airplane pilot for over 20 years, Mr. Baldwin "carried" a license with a multi-engine and instrument rating. He logged over 2,000 hours in his Cessna between business locations as well as chauffeuring family and friends on short and long trips alike.
An avid hunter and wildlife enthusiast, Mr. Baldwin entertained family and friends at the beloved family farm, Featherfin, in Prospect. Kyle and his sister Betty Taylor were instrumental in the transfer of the property to the State of Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries preserving the 2,800 acre farm as a hunting and fishing haven for generations of Virginians.
Mr. Baldwin was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Farmville Lions Club and former trustee of the Virginia National Bank.
Mr. Baldwin was predeceased by his first wife of 35 years, Clara Trower Nottingham Baldwin of Eastville, and their son Thomas Kyle Baldwin Jr., who died in 1955. Their children are Margaret and John Marks of Franklin, and Anne and Ed Bell of New Bern, N.C.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Mary Harvey McClung Baldwin, who resides at Westminister Canterbury, and her children James and Cathy McClung of Roanoke, Marcia and John Porter of Kingsport, Tenn., and John Harvey McClung of Lynchburg. Grandchildren include Clara Marks of Richmond, Kate Marks of Nags Head, N.C., Win Bell of Raleigh, N.C., Ellen Bell of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Lindsay and Maggie McClung of Charlottesville. Mr. Baldwin is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Robert E. Taylor of Farmville. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank Grayson Baldwin and Robert Archer Baldwin.
The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Ginny Long, Shelton Bwondara, and Rich Lyford of Lynchburg and the caring nursing and administrative staff at Westminister Canterbury.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville, with the interment at Westview Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, 400 High St., Farmville, VA. A memorial service will be held in the Louis Weissert Chapel at Westminister Canterbury in Lynchburg at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2008.
