Vern A. Butler, 61, 6280 Lardon Road NE, died Thursday in a Portland hospital.


Born in Fruita, Colo., he came to Dallas as a youth where he graduated from high school in 1935. He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, and in 1950, he was recalled to serve in the Army Air Force for one year in the Korean Conflict.


Following the service, he lived in Portland and Eugene, returning to Salem in 1960 where he was employed at Layton Manufacturing Company.


Survivors include wife, Jean I., daughters, Sharon Morse, Portland, and Cathy Pickerel, Bellevue, Wash.; son, Tim, Salem; mother, Myrtle Butler, Salem; sister, Vivian Grindstaff, in California, and Florence Lam, Salem; brother, Dale E., Salem; three grandchildren.


Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Virgil T. Golden mortuary and interment follows in Belcrest Memorial Park. The casket will be open from 5 p.m. Saturday to 9 p.m. Sunday.
