Florencio Constantino
Original name: Florencio Constantineau
Birth: Apr. 9, 1869
Bilbao
Provincia de Vizcaya
País Vasco, Spain
Death: Nov. 19, 1919
México, Mexico

Acclaimed Tenor. Born on April 9, 1869 in Bilbao (Spain), his real name was Constantineau. He lived first in Argentina, and had one engagement to the Teatro Real Madrid in 1899. He sung a lot of characters: the heroes of Verdi, Rubinstein, Ponchielli, Donizetti, and Wagner. Friend of the Tsar Nicolas II, favorably receveid by the public, he became the star of Manhattan opera in 1908. He didn't manage his career very well. He wounded the bass Giovanni Gravina, on stage, with a spade, and so, gave him 50 000 dollars, lost 250 million dollars in the unsuccessful construction in an opera house. Quite drunk on stage in 1918, he stopped singing and went to Mexico, and died in the most complete poverty in this town. He was probably buried there, with the destitutes. (bio by: Kermoal Brigitte)
