Eleanor Whitney April 13, 1930 - July 17, 2009 NORWICH, CT
- Eleanor B. "Ellie" Whitney, 79, passed away on Friday, July 17, 2009 at Norwichtown Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Hartford, on April 13, 1930 to the late Lincoln and Helen (Breckinridge) Whitney. She attended Bloom-field High School, Hartford Public High School and Norwich Adult High School where she proudly graduated in 1985 with Honors and a scholarship; she attended classed at Mohegan Community Collage. Ellie's childhood was not easy; she moved around a lot within the foster care system until she came to Norwich in 1948 and made it her home. She was strong, caring and proud of her Irish Heritage; she loved to make people smile. She worked as a CNA and Home Health Aide until she retired in 1987 due to her disability; in 1986 she received honors as the Best Home Health Aide. Ellie became a client of Ross Adult Day Care and honorary Chaplain of AHEPA -110 Apartments in 1989. She was an Ensign in Jr. Midshipman of America, a member of the Disabilities Network of Eastern CT and a member of the VFW Post #594 since 1972. She received the Blue Ribbon Award for best legislative chairman for the 1993-94 term of office due to her communications skills within the local, state and federal levels including President Clinton on behalf of the Veterans. Ellie was a communicant of St. Mary's Church and former member of the Choir of the Cathedral of St. Patrick. Ellie has left a brother Robert, sisters Barbara and Patricia, many nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind the Redanz, Furry and Kaisers families to whom she was very close to and a special friend Dan Buchman. She was predeceased by Eileen and Ma Furry. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 from 2-4 at the Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St., Norwich. A 10am Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at the Cathedral of St. Patrick followed by a burial at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in Ellie's memory may be made to the Ross Adult Day Care Center Rec. Dept., 165 McKinley Ave. Norwich, CT 06360.
