TO STILLWATER


The annual 4H Club Roundup being held this week at Stillwater. All of the 4H Clubs of Roger Mills County are represented at this meeting. Strong City is represented by Miss Florence Kendall, W. D. Kendall end Lester Suttles: Crawford by Vern Platt; Three Corners by Junior and Fern Steward; Berlin by Edgar MeVickers, Wendell Campbell Ruby Campbell, Merle Donaldson and Maxine Carr; Meridian by Sylva Husted Olathe Belie Brown, Vern Albin and Fred Henson; Rose Hill by Ruth Robins; Reydon by Lucille Helm and Leland Chandler; Herring by LaRue Stout and Marquis Moad.

The trip is being made in a school truck sponsored by Mr. J. T. MeConkey of Meridian school and Mrs. Wretha Moad of Herring.

Mrs. P. J. Morton entertained the young folks with a party Saturday night. Those present were:
Misses La Rue Stout, Goldia Pearl Shelton, Martha Lacy, Geneva Hill, Vera Smith and Dora Morton. Paul Pinkerton,(sic) Gailey and Quinten Moad, Cleo Walker, Seth Stout, Pete Lacy, Wineford Shelton. G. E. Castleberry, and H. M. Hill. Refreshments of punch and cookies were served by the hostess.

Bessie's , called LaRue, first husband, William, called Bill, Forgey, died about 4 months after they were married. They were living in Stillwater, Oklahoma, at the time of his death as he was attending the Oklahoma State University. She returned home and went back to school in Cheyenne after Bill's, death.

The following notes are from LaRue's Schoolday Memories book found in December 1998 after she moved into the Leedey Nursing Home:

My Dear LaRue, be kind & true to everyone, so in years to pass you woul(sic) be sorry of mistreating(sic) any one. When you get-old you can look at this little book & it will bring your happy school days back to your mind. (All so)sic your school chums & teachers. You may be far from here but you will have a kind spot in your heart for dear old Herring school & child hood days.

Lake Clinton lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see, was when La Rue, Bill, Pee Wee and me went to dance upon the floor, we danced & danced then danced some more, and gosh -- did Bill get sore? As I sit here and write I shall never forget that queer nite.

La Rue don't ever forget these good times we've had together. I shall always remember you as a true pal and hope you do the same.

The Herring Home Demonstration club met in the home of Mrs. Earl Brown, Wednesday afternoon when all of the members were present.

Cleo Walker, Sayre, former Reydon, resident West of town died Friday in the Elk City, Hospital. He leaves, his wife LaRue, 3 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral was Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Elk City. Mrs. Walker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Stout and children moved with the F. M.(sic) Mattlage family from, Rowena, Texas to Herring, Roger Mills County in 1918. Miss Nellie, Mrs. Frank Millar, Miss Edna (Mrs. E.B. Morton) Okla. City began teaching at Reydon, Ok. in 1928.

After the death of her husband, Cleo, LaRue ran the Walker store at highway 282 & 6 a few more years. She sold the store in 1978, and moved to Elk City and took a job with Wal-Mart.

Larue Walker and Margaret Vaught were guests of honor recently when their children and grandchildren met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Walker for a "bon voyage" party. The ladies were on their way to Hawaii.

Members of the Vaught family attending were Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cook, Jamie, Laurie and Angie; Mrs. Lynn Vaught, Rodney, Cody and Colter, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Vaught, Chris and Shelly.

Mrs. Walker's family attending were Mr. and Mrs. Gary Pope and Brandi, Jeanetta and Michael Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Walker and Tyler, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Walker, Susie and Jill.

Mrs. LaRue Walker and family, Donnie, Lynda and Tyler Walker, ate Christmas dinner at the Holiday Inn in Elk City with Mrs. Mae Dodson.

In March 1997 Cleo's wife, Bessie, called LaRue, was retired and living in Elk City, Oklahoma.
In November 1998 due to poor health LaRue moved to Leedey, Oklahoma.
In May 1999 LaRue moved to an nursing home in Sayre, Oklahoma.
During the first 2 weeks of August 1999 LaRue was in the Deaconess Senior Center before she returned to an Elk City nursing home.

LaRue's brother, James Stout, married Marie Damron. Marie.s 1st cousin is Darryl R Noblitt. Darryl married Julia Mae "Judy" Cribbs. LaRue's Husband, Cleo, is Judy's 1st cousin.

Correct Obituary (Wrong in all published newspapers)

Bessie LaRue Walker was born November 26, 1918 in the Herring community a few miles SW of the Herring school house the youngest child of James "Burl" & Lagolia "Mug" (Kemp) Stout. She passed away Monday, July 10, 2000, at 9:17am in the Elk City Nursing Home at the age of 81 years 7 months and 14 days.

LaRue attended school at Herring and Cheyenne. LaRue married first William "Bill" Forgey, Jr. on June 22, 1935 who passed away 4 months after their marriage. She married 2nd Cleo Dawson Walker at Cheyenne on October 10, 1936. When they were first married they lived in Texas on a ranch. Except for a few years in TX, CA and OR LaRue lived most of her life in western OK primarily in Roger Mills & Beckham County where they farmed. Mr. Walker passed away on February 6, 1976 and she moved to Elk City in 1979. LaRue belonged to the Hammon and Berlin Round-Up Clubs and was a volunteer at the Elk City Nursing Home for several years. Besides farming and ranching, she worked at Sears and Roebuck in the 1950's. In the early 1960's LaRue worked at the Westland Theatre in Elk City. In the 1970's, together with her husband, owned and operated Walker's Country Grocery north of Sayre for several years. In Elk City, LaRue worked for Wal-Mart for several years. Her hobbies were sewing, gardening, doing yard work and writing poetry.

She was a member of the Elk City Main Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cleo Walker, on February 6, 1976, and 3 sisters, Hazel Andris (Elk City, 1992), Johnnie Ashworth Morris (Amarillo, 1974), Louise Moore (Berlin, 1977) and 1 brother James Stout, Jr. (Elk City, 1954).

She is survived by 5 children, Dale Walker and wife Mary, Elk City, Jeanetta Jackson, Gadsden, AL and fiancee Harry Payne, Hammon, Donnie Walker and wife Lynda, Sweetwater, Robert Walker, Edmond, Tamie Phillips and husband Gary, Sayre; a sister Lagolia Finchum, OKC and brother Seth "Buck" Stout and wife Lorraine, Elk City, 2 brother-in-laws, Glenn Moore, Berlin, Herman Walker, Richland, MO, and 2 sister-in-laws Marie Stout & Ola Walker both of Elk City; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren over the states of AL, LA, OK, and TX; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives, as well as her special friend Margaret (Vaught) Hunt, Elk City, and many friends.

Services will be held, July 15, 2000 at 10:30 AM at Whinery-Savage Chapel, officiated by James Perkey. Burial will be at Berlin Cemetery under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service.

Cleo Walker, Sayre, former Reydon, resident West of town died Friday in the Elk City, Hospital. He leaves, his wife LaRue, 3 sons and 2 daughters. The funeral was Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Elk City. Mrs. Walker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Stout and children moved with the F. M.(sic) Mattlage family from, Rowena, Texas to Herring, Roger Mills County in 1918. Miss Nellie, Mrs. Frank Millar, Miss Edna (Mrs. E.B. Morton) Okla. City began teaching at Reydon, Ok. in 1928.

After the death of her husband, Cleo, LaRue ran the Walker store at highway 282 & 6 a few more years. She sold the store in 1978, and moved to Elk City and took a job with Wal-Mart.

Larue Walker and Margaret Vaught were guests of honor recently when their children and grandchildren met in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Walker for a "bon voyage" party. The ladies were on their way to Hawaii.

Members of the Vaught family attending were Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cook, Jamie, Laurie and Angie; Mrs. Lynn Vaught, Rodney, Cody and Colter, and Mr. and Mrs. Larry Vaught, Chris and Shelly.

Mrs. Walker's family attending were Mr. and Mrs. Gary Pope and Brandi, Jeanetta and Michael Jackson, Mr. and Mrs. Donnie Walker and Tyler, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Walker, Susie and Jill.

Mrs. LaRue Walker and family, Donnie, Lynda and Tyler Walker, ate Christmas dinner at the Holiday Inn in Elk City with Mrs. Mae Dodson.

In March 1997 Cleo's wife, Bessie, called LaRue, was retired and living in Elk City, Oklahoma.
In November 1998 due to poor health LaRue moved to Leedey, Oklahoma.
In May 1999 LaRue moved to an nursing home in Sayre, Oklahoma.
During the first 2 weeks of August 1999 LaRue was in the Deaconess Senior Center before she returned to an Elk City nursing home.

LaRue's brother, James Stout, married Marie Damron. Marie.s 1st cousin is Darryl R Noblitt. Darryl married Julia Mae "Judy" Cribbs. LaRue's Husband, Cleo, is Judy's 1st cousin.

Bessie LaRue Walker was born November 26, 1918 in the Herring community a few miles SW of the Herring school house the youngest child of James "Burl" & Lagolia "Mug" (Kemp) Stout. She passed away Monday, July 10, 2000, at 9:17am in the Elk City Nursing Home at the age of 81 years 7 months and 14 days.

LaRue attended school at Herring and Cheyenne. LaRue married first William "Bill" Forgey, Jr. on June 22, 1935 who passed away 4 months after their marriage. She married 2nd Cleo Dawson Walker at Cheyenne on October 10, 1936. When they were first married they lived in Texas on a ranch. Except for a few years in TX, CA and OR LaRue lived most of her life in western OK primarily in Roger Mills & Beckham County where they farmed. Mr. Walker passed away on February 6, 1976 and she moved to Elk City in 1979. LaRue belonged to the Hammon and Berlin Round-Up Clubs and was a volunteer at the Elk City Nursing Home for several years. Besides farming and ranching, she worked at Sears and Roebuck in the 1950's. In the early 1960's LaRue worked at the Westland Theatre in Elk City. In the 1970's, together with her husband, owned and operated Walker's Country Grocery north of Sayre for several years. In Elk City, LaRue worked for Wal-Mart for several years. Her hobbies were sewing, gardening, doing yard work and writing poetry.

She was a member of the Elk City Main Street Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cleo Walker, on February 6, 1976, and 3 sisters, Hazel Andris (Elk City, 1992), Johnnie Ashworth Morris (Amarillo, 1974), Louise Moore (Berlin, 1977) and 1 brother James Stout, Jr. (Elk City, 1954).

She is survived by 5 children, Dale Walker and wife Mary, Elk City, Jeanetta Jackson, Gadsden, AL and fiancee Harry Payne, Hammon, Donnie Walker and wife Lynda, Sweetwater, Robert Walker, Edmond, Tamie Phillips and husband Gary, Sayre; a sister Lagolia Finchum, OKC and brother Seth "Buck" Stout and wife Lorraine, Elk City, 2 brother-in-laws, Glenn Moore, Berlin, Herman Walker, Richland, MO, and 2 sister-in-laws Marie Stout & Ola Walker both of Elk City; 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren over the states of AL, LA, OK, and TX; several nieces and nephews; and other relatives, as well as her special friend Margaret (Vaught) Hunt, Elk City, and many friends.

Services will be held, July 15, 2000 at 10:30 AM at Whinery-Savage Chapel, officiated by James Perkey. Burial will be at Berlin Cemetery under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service.

Larue's oldest known ancestor buried in Oklahoma is John Westerfield.
