William Varney was listed as a 31yo Tailor from England, who departed from London & arrived at New York on the Ship "Columbia" on 22 Sep 1835. He settled in Loudoun County prior to 1843. He was occupied as a tailor, and 46yo on the 1850 Census, with wife Maria age 47 born in VA, and son John 7yo born in VA. Loudoun Co. Marriage transcript reads: "William Varney & Maria Cummings. Geo. W. Noland attests bride's age, bond made 20 Mar 1843 in Shelburne Parish." Transcript of Loudoun Co. Death register showed: "Wm. Varney, white male, d. 6 Jan 1853 nr Purcellville of concussion brain at 49y, parents unknown, b. England, tailor, consort of Mariah Varney, source Geo. W. Noland, friend." The gravestone in North Fork Regular Baptist Ce. is inscribed: "IN MEMORY OF/ WILLIAM VARNEY/ Erected by Loudoun Division / Sons of Temperance, No. 315". The North Fork Regular Baptist Church and churchyard are located on Road #728 near Purcellville and Hamilton, VA. William's son John was the first of 4 generations of Virginians named John William Varney.
The descendants settled in Alexandria.
