James Thompson and his parents moved to Danville, Kentucky in his childhood. He remained there until 1860 when he clerked in Harrodsburg. In 1870, he and his brother, Thomas W. Thompson moved to Winterset, Iowa to open a dry goods business under the name, Thompson Brothers Mercantile. In 1876, the two men moved to Dallas, Texas and opened their business there with their three younger brothers, William Thompson, John Thompson, and David Thompson. Thompson Brothers Mercantile was located at 503 and 505 Elm Street. Their sales the first year were $50,000 and by 1880, their sales topped $100,000.. Mr. Thompson was a Mason and a member of the Odd Fellows. He was a member of no church but theoretically a Christian. He never married and neither of his brothers are married. He has three sisters - Mary Pence, Lucy Wycoff, Laura Goar.
