Herman Strodthoff, 75, pioneer cheese and butter maker of the county, and
later a farmer, died last night at the homestead near the village of Manitowoc
Rapids. He had been ill a year, following a stroke.
Funeral services will probably be held Monday afternoon from the German
Evangelical Lutheran church on South Eighth street. Burial will be in Evergreen
cemetery.
Mr. Strodthoff was born in Newton in 1864 and when a young man took up cheese
and butter making, establishing a factory in Newton. He was one of the first to
engage in this business in the county and was one of the Wisconsin medal award
winners at the Columbian exposition at Chicago in 1893.
Thirty years ago he disposed of his business in Newton and moved to a farm on
route 4, Manitowoc, near the village of Rapids.
Fifty-nine years ago he married Minnie Vogelsang, who survives with a son, Erwin,
of Manitowoc Rapids; two brothers, William of Rockwood, Henry of Tujunga, Calif.,
and a grandchild, Annabelle Strodthoff of Manitowoc Rapids.
Mr. Strodthoff was one of the principals in 1937 of a brother reunion in this
county, when after an absence of 35 years, Henry Strodthoff returned from
California to visit his brother and other relatives. Henry, the brother, left
Manitowoc in 1895 and was unheard from until he wrote he was coming back here
for the family reunion.
The body may be viewed at the Vogelsang funeral home here.
