51 Squadron's Handley Page Halifax II (#HR727) aircraft, with an aircrew of seven, took off at night from RAF Snaith for an air operation over Frankfurt, Germany. Following the operation, HR727 was leaving the target area when it sustained some damage, radio loss and fuel loss because of a German night-fighter attack. The Halifax's pilot was able to continue the flight back to England; but poor weather conditions were encountered, preventing clear ground visuals at a high altitude. In descending through the cloud, HR727 crashed on Ashop Moor, Peak District, Derbyshire, taking the lives of five members of the crew and injuring two others.
