William Harold Smith, 85, a resident of Jacksonville, FL, formerly of Allenwood, PA, passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2010 in the VA Medical Center at Lake City, FL. Born in Washington Twp., Lycoming Co., PA, on Thursday, September 11, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Helen E. (Dapp) Smith.
Bill was the widower of Bernice G. (Kurtz) Smith who preceded him in death on December 11, 1999.
Bill received his master's degree from Lycoming College. He honorably served during the Second World War with the U.S. Army Air Corp and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Bill was retired from the former Anchor Darling Valve at Williamsport, PA. He had previously been employed by the former Montgomery Mills. He had also been an instructor at the former Williamsport Technical Institute.
Bill attended the Church of Arygle at Jacksonville, FL. He enjoyed gardening, building bird houses and assisting his son-in-law with the Maharaj family business. He was a member of the Lane Wally Senior Citizens Club at Jackson, FL.
Bill is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Edna Lorraine Smith Maharaj and Jai Maharaj, Jacksonville, FL; Helen L. Snow, Live Oak, FL and Mona Rae Bartlett, Montgomery, PA. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Bill was preceded in death by one daughter, Berniece Brenning, two grandsons, Jason Bartlett and Frederick Smith, one brother Charles Smith and two sisters, Clara Belle Moore and Miriam Shaffer.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Galen R. Betzer Funeral Service, 108 North Main Street, Muncy, PA at 1:00 P.M. on Friday, August 27, 2010 with Reverend Richard M. Barner, pastor of the First United Methodist Church at Montgomery, officiating. Interment will be in the Elimsport Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 12:00 - 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Graveside military services will be conducted by the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County. The family will provide the flowers.
