LaVerne Hausvik, age 84, of Huron, and formerly of Turton, SD, and Conde, SD, died Sunday, September 2, 2007, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.

LaVerne Hausvik was born LaVerne Rose Pembroke on April 7, 1923, to George and Anna Mae (Conley) Pembroke at Verdon, SD. She graduated from Turton high School in 1941. Prior to her marriage she owned and operated the Pembroke Café in Turton.

On September 5, 1951, LaVerne married Orval Hausvik at Turton. Following their marriage, they lived on a farm east of Turton for 36 years.

LaVerne was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Turton and taught catechism and served as the secretary-treasurer for the Altar Society for many years; Holy Trinity Catholic Parish in Huron; Double V's Extension Club; Ladies VFW; and the Turton All School Reunion Committee. In 1970 LaVerne was the recipient of the Outstanding Farm Wife Award from the Aberdeen American News. Family and friends benefited from her talents at cooking, baking, house keeping, gardening, pickle-making, sewing, and mending. Her greatest joy in life was becoming a grandmother and great-grandmother.

In 1993, she moved to Huron and resided at 833 13th St. SW. LaVerne worked part time with the Experience Works (Green Thumb) Program as a receptionist at the Centennial Stone Church, Federal Building, Salvation Army, and Huron Area Senior Center until her retirement in 2003.

Grateful for having shared her life are 1 daughter, Peggy (John) Tisdel of Huron; 1 son, Randy (Lucy) Hausvik of Turton; 4 grandchildren Brandon (Kim) Hofer of Arnold, MO, Jared (Stacey) Hofer of Mitchell, SD, Jennifer (Gary) Kwasniewski of Florence, SD, and Lindsey (Joey) Haskell of Frankfort, SD; 6 great grandchildren, Joey Hofer, Taylor Hofer, Kara Hofer, Lauren Hofer, Hannah Kwasniewski, and Carson Kwasniewski; 1 brother, Robert (Jeannette) Pembroke of Mobridge, SD; 1 sister, Vera Pillen of Omaha, NE; 1 brother-in-law, Fred Nazro of New London, CT; 1 sister-in-law, Matilda Pembroke of Huron; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orval on July 5, 1987; 1 brother, Leonard Pembroke; and 3 sisters, Lucille Nazro; Maggie LaBrie, and an infant sister, Mary Pembroke; and 2 brothers-in-law, Dale Pillen and Dale LaBrie.

Her funeral mass will be Wednesday, September 5, at Holy Trinity Catholic parish with Father Terry Anderson officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Aberdeen.
