Edwin was the third child of Elias Oxford and Charlotte Francis Gilbert. His parents had already divorced by the time of his birth. Possibly due to economics of the time, military pension records reflect that Elias asked a farmer and family friend to raise and care for Edwin. Records and family history reflect that Edwin maintained a relationship with both of his parents as well as having great respect for the farmer whom he affectionately called Daddy (James) Owens.

Edwin's father joined the Union Army in July 1861, was captured that October, exchanged in May 1862 and died a few days after freedom. Edwin, who was musically inclined, wanted to join the fray as a drummer boy but "Daddy" Owens would have none of it.

Edwin married Clara Ophelia Lake on February 27, 1880. They had two sons, Morton and William, before Clara died in 1886. Edwin then married Amanda H. Price on September 15, 1889. They had ten children, four of whom died very young and are buried in nearby graves. The surviving children were Ray, Okie, Perle, Herschol, Beulah and Jessie.
