Stella Irene Crowder was the third child of 4 born to Garland Nelson Crowder and Martha S. Crossley. She was born on June 16 1897 in Hart, McDonald Co.,Missouri.
When she married for the first time to a newspaper reporter from Springfield, Missouri by the name of Merrill Nipps, he suggested that she go by the name Estelle instead of Stella since he thought that sounded more elegant. (source: Nedra East Crowder's recollection-Nedra is Estelle's sister-in-law who is still living)
They never had children, but she was step mother to his two daughters from his previous marriage: Eugenia (married a Swaim) and Marie (married a Harris and a Smith).
Stell, as I always heard her called, had a full sister named Pearl Mae Crowder Yocum Dooley, two full brothers: James Walter Crowder and Oscar Crowder.
Her mother, Martha Crossley died after Oscar was born, and her father later married Mellvina Wilson which gave her 4 half brothers and 2 half sisters: Chester, George, Omer, Norman, Buelah and a baby girl who died at birth that was never named.
One of the things that she and her husband Merrill did in their life, was to own a motel in Mt. Vernon Missouri named The Walnuts Motel.
Excerts from obits:
Estelle Irene Nipps-she was a Registered Nurse and a wonderful seamstress. She was survived by her husband; sisters, Pearle Dooley of Covina CA and Beulah Hill of Seneca; and four unnamed brothers all in Missouri.
She was buried in White Chapel Cemetery, Springfield Missouri.
