W. W. MUMFORD

William Waldo Mumford was born Nov. 16, 1876, near Webster, Adair county, Iowa, and died April 28, 1921, near Dickens, Iowa, being at the time of his death 44 years, 5 months and 12 days of age.

He was married to Nancy Lowe on Jan. 16, 1901. To this union eight children were born, five boys and three girls: Earnest, Leo, Virgil, Carl, Lloyd, Mildred, Ethel and Mrs. Chester Cox, of Dickens, Iowa.

The family moved to Lucas county in 1905 and from here to Palo Alto county in March, 1920, living there until the time of his death.

He joined the M. E. church when a young man, changing to the Adventist's faith about two years ago. He was always a devoted Christian man, ever holding in high esteem the teachings of the Bible.

He was plowing in his field on Tuesday afternoon, April 26, when one of the horses began kicking and it is believed he was thrown from the plow and it looked as if the horses had turned sharply, passing him and the plow, laying a horrible gash in his head and crushing his skull in another place. There were other bruises about his face and body.

One son, in the same field, soon discovered him and rushed for help. Four doctors were called, one a specialist, but they held out no hope for him. He never regained consciousness and died on Thursday morning at 3 o'clock.

He leaves to mourn his death his wife and eight children, also two brothers, James Mumford of Russell and Thomas Keith of Winterset; two sisters, Mrs. Verdie Lake of Winterset and Mrs. Elizabeth Schrader of Albert City, Iowa and a host of friends.

The remains were brought to Chariton and funeral services were conducted at the Zion church on Sunday afternoon by Rev. Starr of Ottumwa and interment was made in Zion cemetery.
