Awarded the Military Medal (MM) on 06 Aug 1916 at Pozières for gallantry where "During the attack on Pozieres Ridge on the 4th to the 6th August 1916, this Stretcher Bearer worked continuously for forty eight hours gathering wounded from most exposed positions and positions which were under shell-fire continuously. He showed the greatest coolness and courage under the most trying circumstances."

His is one of three WW1 war-graves here but Murwillumbah Old Cemetery has been turned into a park. The graves were private family graves and maintained by the families. The headstones of the war casualties were removed and they are now alternatively commemorated on a plaque.
