After 21 years as a Point Loma pediatrician, Dr. William Keith McCord accepted a new challenge: medical director of juvenile correctional facilities in San Diego County.

He was in his second year in that role when he suffered a fatal heart attack while on business Thursday in San Diego. He was 54. During his medical career in San Diego, Dr. McCord served as a clinical professor of pediatrics at UCSD. He was on the staffs at Sharp Cabrillo Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Sharp Memorial Hospital and Children's Hospital and Health Center. "Bill was always willing to do a little more work and go the extra mile for his patients," said Dr. Thomas Self, a longtime friend and pediatric gastroenterologist. "If he told you he would be finished in a half-hour, that could easily turn into another hour or two. Sometimes he looked so tired he could drop."
Although he moved his private practice to various offices in the Point Loma area over the years, Dr. McCord retained many of the same patients. Each office was readily identifiable by the rooftop cutout silhouettes of children, fashioned by his wife, Kathi. "Patients appreciated his meticulousness," Self said. "And he had a very jovial Southern accent that added to his charm. Patients loved to hear him talk." One of Dr. McCord's major interests as a physician and researcher was Down syndrome. Bob Sutherland, father of a 21-year-old with Down syndrome, Kari Sutherland, said Dr. McCord "personally ushered Kari through life." Born in Jackson, Miss., Dr. McCord stayed in the South to earn his bachelor's degree at the University of Georgia and his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed his pediatric residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego. After serving as a Navy physician from 1971 to 1978, Dr. McCord founded the Shelter Island Pediatric Medical Clinic in San Diego.
He sold his practice in March 1999 to work for the county of San Diego. "Bill had a God-granted gift for caring for children beyond just their physical ailments," said Eileen Deely, whose seven children and several grandchildren were treated by Dr. McCord.
