William McCaw was born about 1740 in County Antrim, Ireland. William's family were members of the Presbyterian Conventer Church in the Parish of Ballymoney.

Around 1757, William married Ann Watson; with whom he had the following known children:
John (1758-1825)
William (1759-1804)
Elizabeth (1762-1845)
James (1762-1840)
Martha (1766-)
Ann (1768-1808)
Samuel (1770-1865)
Jane (1772-)

William McCaw and his family were part of a large group of Presbyterians who followed an emigration to South Carolina, starting around 1771. He was granted 250 acres on Bull Run, Chester, South Carolina; in the bounds of what would become Purity Presbyterian and Hopewell Reformed Presbyterian churches. Here William and Anna raised their children.

In William McCaw's Last Will & Testament; dated April 27th 1796 and Probated on March 1st 1797; William mentions his four sons and four daughters along with his beloved wife, Ann. He appoints his eldest son, John and son-in-law (husband of Elizabeth) Edward L. McDaniel co-Executors to administer his estate.
