Lieut Thomas Bell Mains
Birth: Feb. 6, 1842
Franklin County
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: May 12, 1864
Drewrys Bluff
Chesterfield County
Virginia, USA

The son of Marshall & Sarah Ann Mains, in 1860, he was a farmer living with his family in Southampton Township, Franklin County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Darnestown, Maryland, October 17, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Frederick, Maryland, December 10 as a private with Co. K, 3rd New York Cavalry, but promoted to corporal October 24, 1862, and to sergeant sometime in May or June 1863. On December 16, 1863, he received promotion to the rank of 2nd lieutenant and transferred to Co. F, 2nd U.S. Colored Cavalry, and then promoted go 1st lieutenant, date as yet unknown. He was killed in action at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia. His compiled military service records spell his last name "Maines."

Although the photo to the right identifies him as "Capt.," he never attained that rank. In fact, the photo, assuming it is he, shows him as a private, meaning that it was taken sometime within the first year of service. The caption also misidentifies his first regiment and fails to mention his second.

It has been suggested that he is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, but no grave has been located there.
