Lukes, Romelda "Rommie" A.

Romelda Agnes Lukes, age 94, a resident of Manitowoc, was born into eternal life on Sunday, February 16, 2014.

Rommie's remarkable journey through life began October 2, 1919, when she was born on the Feast of the Guardian Angels to Clara (Schuler) and Theodore Kautzer in the town of Eaton. She attended grade school at St. Gregory's Catholic School, St. Nazianz, and graduated from Valders High School in 1938. Romelda fine-tuned her sewing and culinary skills at Manitowoc Vocational School. She also worked in sales at Jenson's Women's Wear. St. Gregory's Church in St. Nazianz was the site of her marriage to Clarence Lukes on April 18, 1942, and they raised their family in Manitowoc. Her husband preceded her in death on September 11, 1994.

Romelda's greatest joy in life was her family. She was a dearly loved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She had a real zest for life, a sunny attitude, and was forever young in looks and thoughts. Rommie had a kind and gentle heart, and friends were very precious to her. Vacations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe added to her interest in world affairs. Her dedication to making her home a loving place included baking the best cookies this side of Germany, and preparing scrumptious soup to serve an army! Rommie also was an avid Brewers and Packers fan. She enjoyed playing sheepshead, deciphering word puzzles, reading, cooking and baking, dancing, knitting and sewing. Many of the clothes Rommie wore reflected her creative talents. Her lovely flower/vegetable garden was a delight for the many birds she fed.

Romelda's deep faith was expressed through her ministry within her parish. As a member of the former Holy Innocents Church, she was a Eucharistic Minister, a lector and a greeter, and an active and faithful member of the Christian Women's Organization. She was presently a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, and belonged to the St. Clare Women's Society. Other involvement in the community included the Manitowoc Senior Center, and Daughters of Isabella. Romelda worked at the Manitowoc County Fair as a Clothing Superintendant.

Rommie is loved and will be missed by her family: one daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Ron Lensmire; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Ruth Lukes; one grandson, Daniel Lukes, all of Manitowoc. Also surviving are one sister, Jeanette Zolltheis of Sheboygan; one brother, Melvin Kautzer, of Sarasota, Florida; a special friend, Dorothy Boutin, of Manitowoc. Many nieces, nephews and friends have also been touched positively by Romelda's life.

Preceding Romelda in death were her parents; husband, Clarence; sister and brother-in-law, Verna and Robert Godard; brother and sister-in-law, Stanley and Frances Kautzer; sister-in-law, Corella Kautzer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Emil and Rita Lukes; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Victor and Marie Lukes; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marcella and Arnold Ozga; brother-in-law, Harold Zolltheis; and special friend, Bill Rowlay.
