CONFEDERATE MARTYR

Sherwood Hatley may possibly be Sherod Hatley who was born in 1804 or 1805 in North Carolina and is later found in the 1850 Census for Union County and the 1860 Census for Webster County, Kentucky.

Executed by order of Union General Stephen Gano Burbridge pursuant to Order No. 59 in retaliation for the death of a Union soldier near Jeffersontown -- purportedly by guerilla raider Sue Mundy.

Following their execution, the bodies of these four Confederates were dumped in a ditch until being buried here.

Of his three co-martyrs, only Wilson P. Lilly is still buried with him in the Jeffersontown Cemetery (#166380792).

His other co-martyrs were later removed elsewhere. Lindsey Duke Buckner is buried in Edwards Cemetery, Green County, Kentucky (#106034559). And M. [William C.] Blincoe is buried in Bates Cemetery, Hancock County, Kentucky (#87772062).

In all, 50 Confederate Martyrs died across Kentucky as the result of General "Butcher" Burbridge's Order No. 59.
