BELOVED PAPA ... I wish I would have had time for that last bowl of ice cream Papa...I will always regret being in a hurry that evening....
You heard this song - and the words struck you - Papa you had me buy you a cassette just to hear I'm just a Ghost in this House We were all amazed! You were born in the Floyd Homestead House in 1907 and died in that same room in 1991. It was as though you knew the time was near. You always told me "I came into this world with no science and I am leaving it with no science." And you did.
My Precious Mama's Darling Daddy:
Born on Floyd Homestead (orig. part of George Floyd Headright Peters Colony 1848)dlvd by:"Birdie"Stephenson (midwife/caregiver)lifelong neighbor/daugh of Kitty Stephenson-ex-slave of James & Sarah Taylor; died in same room he was born in-1991. The son and Great-Grandson of early Dallas pioneers (buried at Floyd-Taylor Cemetery)father-Oscar M. Floyd. Left home at 12yrs. worked with carnivals, ranching, at the 101 Ranch in Tulsa - farming -the real "PrettyBoy"; friends of Bonnie&Clyde and many known gangsters. Lots of history in that old house! Married Viola in 1928 - fathered 4 children - retired from Schoellkopf Company, Dallas, TX in 1972. An avid Fisherman - we all know he took more secrets to his grave than anyone but family will ever tell. He told us all "He came into the world with no science, and he would go out with no science." He did. Died of a massive heart attack on the floor - family surrounding him. He told us "If you want to keep a secret - don't tell anybody. If you can't keep your mouth shut - why would you think they can?" Fondly called Papa - he sat in his swing under the black walnut tree never leaving his property for the last 20 yrs of his life. He watched out the kitchen window for one of us to come down the road bringing him a "sweet" (ice cream or other goodies!) When Papa walked through that backdoor we got out of his chair at once - out of respect for the man - never a question. At his house - the men ate first - they did the work and Granny enforced it and some of the younger gals (mid 1980's onward) got upset. But it was old-school and an era would soon be gone forever. Even though the habits ingrained are hard to break. Granny always made a pitcher of tea - and you never left Granny and Papa's house hungry. There wa a horsehoe that hung over the back-porch -kitchen door - Granny told us it meant you'd never there hungry. The well in the backyard still stands, as does the old brickhouse (smokehouse)as does the spring in the creek where Granny had to haul water uphill to wash on a rub-board all her life. They don't make folks life this anymore. Funny: Papa thought that the Purina cat-chow commercial (circa 1970's)- Chow-Chow-Chow -cat was a robot - Granny said it was real - and the Civil War remained in the house as Granny was a Blue-Blooded Yankee and Papa a red-blooded Rebel. I remember watching Papa pull his teeth with pliers and toss'em out the door. He doctored snake-bites with coal-oil. He did not believe in doctors. He said that was why he would live a long life. He was preceded in death by his 2nd son Guy Raymond Floyd in 1984 (or so).. "Never back to cemetery - they're not there" he taught us. His Eulogy was given by his son-in-law, James A. Dodd, Sr-husband of Patricia Margaret. His procession from Byrum Funeral Home included many police Officials from neighboring counties - a real tribute to a "Pretty Boy"! Buried with his Grandson's Police Badge #410 from Palmer, TX Louie Travis Dodd,Sr..In whom responsibility for homeplace was entrusted and he would be the Keeper of the Floyd-Taylor Cemetery. Nobody would run over Granny - she outlived him almost 12 yrs. and Fortress of Love surrounded her. Her daughter "Patsy" lived with her the last 18 months of her life in the old-house through all of the suffering, sorrow and pain of seeing Granny "go-away" in such a manner. Floyd blood Loves Fiercely and Forever! As for me, I named my son- Gary Arthur after my Papa. Gary Arthur Great-Grandson #13. He is now 23 yrs old and Pap would be proud of his "Little Man". [Time marches on - 2011, my Son will be 30]
Kindly respect my Papa's Memorials:
