Stephen Russell Ellis was born in Hawtree District (now Hawtree township near Norina), Bute County (now Warren County), North Carolina. He was married twice to Elizabeth who died in South Carolina and Phoebe Moss Ellis that was buried next to his gravesite. He and his wife were ones who came to Georgia, former home of Cherokee and set in a small town called Pine Log, Georgia (near Rydal, Georgia) from South Carolina. Stephen founded the church called Pine Log Methodist Church in ca. 1834 and served as a pastor until his death. The original church (barn)
was destroyed during American Civil War and but second church was rebuilt and still using in a service. It is one of U.S. National Register of Historic Places (see http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WM2RX3) today. Stephen and both wives had 14 children.
