Civil War Veteran. Duncan was the Quartermaster Sergeant for the 46th Regiment Pennnsylvania Infantry. He enlisted on August 6, 1861 and was discharged on July 31, 1865. Prior to enlisting, Duncan had learned the blacksmith trade in Mount Union PA. In 1871 he married Mary E. Mineger. In 1879 Duncan moved to Arizona. In 1890 he settled in Tombstone. He was a clerk for the Board of Supervisors of Cochise County, a judge and justice of the peace. His wife died in Westfield NY on October 3, 1882. They had one son, Lemuel D Duncan. James Duncan's father, John Duncan, and uncle, Tom Duncan, constructed the Globe Mills in 1842 in Philadelphia. When Duncan died, he was the last surviving member of Tombstone's GAR Burnside Post.

James met and married Julia Ann Lee Blockburger, a widow who was living in Los Angeles. They met 18 years prior when he went to California on business and married on 25 Sept 1905 in Tucson. They plan to live in Tombstone where he had been a justice of the peace and held other offices. He is presently chief clerk and accountant at the Tombstone Improvement Co. Julia suffered with cancer and had gone to Pasadena for treatment but died Mar. 28, 1922. Judge Duncan later died Feb. 21, 1926 in Douglas leaving a son, Lemuel to survive.
