Born James Andrew Duncan Le Briton. Grandson of Elizabeth Duncan, son of Alice Hill. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 15 August 1915 under his Grandmother's surname and embarked from Sydney for overseas on 8 March 1916 aboard HMAT "Star of England" (A15). He was killed in action at Fleurbaix, France, aged 28 years.
