On 3 February 1945, his battle damaged B-17 #42-102501, THE CHALLENGER, returning from a bombing mission to Berlin, Germany was forced to ditch in the North Sea.
SGT Cook and the Pilot, Robert Clay Long, died of exposure on the British rescue launch after being pulled from the sea. The Radio Operator, Fred A. Maki was lost at sea and six crew mates were rescued and survived.
