Chester Robert Buchanan Jr., 96, passed away Monday, February 27, 2017 at Deerfield in Urbandale.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, March 2, 2017, at McLaren's Chapel in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation will be at 10 a.m., prior to the service.

Bob was born January 29, 1921 to Chester Robert Sr. and Margaret (Picken) Buchanan in Truro, Iowa.

During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Europe.

Following the war, he attended college at AIB where he received his degree in Business. He worked at Waldinger Corporation, where he retired from after working approximately 40 years as an accountant.

Bob was united in marriage to Nadine Jean Delano on June 11, 1947.

Bob enjoyed working in his yard and gardening. He was especially proud of his peonies, irises and rose bushes, along with his tomato plants. He was known as the after school grandpa, always making sure his grandkids were taken care of. Bob was a proud member of the Urbandale community and was a charter member of the Westkirk Presbyterian Church.

Bob is survived by his four children: daughters, Nancy (Gary) Griffin and Sandra (Kevin) Nelson; sons, David Buchanan, and Robert (Cheryl) Buchanan; grandchildren: Dennis (Erin) Griffin, Brian Griffin, David (Cassie) Griffin, Kimberly Nelson, Craig (Pamela) Nelson and Alysa (Nick) Cosby; great-granddaughter, Addisyn Griffin and another on the way; sister, Ferne Olson along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine and his parents.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Unity Point Hospice.

The family would like to thank the staff at Methodist West 4th floor for the care received. They would also like to thank the staff and his friends at Deerfield the last seven years.
