Birth: 1837
North Dakota, USA
Death: Jun. 25, 1876
Little Big Horn Battle Site
Big Horn County
Montana, USA

Private, Indian Scouts, 7th US Cavalry. One of General Custer's favorite scouts, he was killed in action at the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

His father was a Hunkpapa Sioux and his mother a Ree Indian. When he was 14, his mother returned with him to her people, and he was raised there. In his early twenties, he carried the US mail from Fort Totten to Fort Stevenson. In 1868, he enlisted for 6 months in the Indian Scouts at Fort Stevenson. Soon after the establishment of Fort Abraham Lincoln, ND, in 1873, he volunteered to serve the 7th Cavalry as an Indian Scout, and participated in the 1873 Yellowstone Expedition, and the 1874 Black Hills Expedition. He was considered an excellent and reliable Scout, and was one of Custer's favorites. During the 1876 Sioux Campaign, he was assigned to Major Reno's Battalion, and during the valley fight, he was killed by a shot directly to his head, as the cavalry prepared to retreat from the valley. Pieces of his skull and brains were splattered on Major Reno at the time. His body was probably buried in the valley on 27 June 1876 by Colonel John Gibbon's men. He was survived by his wife, She Owl, and a son. Two gravestones exist: one in the Indian Scout Cemetery (near White Shield, ND) and another in Bell Cemetery (reinterment site No. 1)(in the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota).
