He was born in Detroit to Bertha and Carl Appold. After earning a University of Michigan graduate degree, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps before Pearl Harbor, and was a pilot in B-24s. He joined Lockheed, retiring as vice president of Lockheed/Martin and program director of the C-5 aircraft. After retirement, the family lived in Gainesville, where they were members of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Edie, Niceville, Fla.; daughters, Linda Appold Anderson, Santa Rosa, Calif., Kaaren Appold Peterschmidt, Deer Park, Calif., Jennifer Taylor Neilson, Glendora, Calif., and Shannon Taylor Musgrave, Clearlake Park, Calif.; son, Rocky Taylor, San Dimas, Calif.; and two granddaughters.
