Sergeant, Company D, 7th US Cavalry.

He enlisted on 24 Sept 1874, at age 28, as a Private in the 7th Cavalry in St. Louis, Missouri, listing his previous occupation as a farmer. During the 1876 Sioux Expedition, he was part of Reno's Battalion, and survived the Battle of the Little Big Horn. On 7 May 1877, he was recommended for an award of a medal for conspicuous gallantry by Captain Edward Godfrey. He was killed on 30 Sept 1877 in the Snake Creek Fight against Chief Joseph's band of Nez Perce Indians. Originally buried on the battlefield (the custom at that time), he was disinterred and re-buried on 7 August 1913 in the Custer National Cemetery (formerly called Little Big Horn Battlefield National Cemetery). He was 5 feet, 5 3/4 inches tall, had blue eyes, brown hair, and a fair complexion. He was not married.
