Chico To Honor Remains of First Soldier Dead. The remains of William H. Aitken, Chico's first world war hero who made the supreme sacrifice for his country in France in 1918, were returned to Chico from overseas Thursday night, and will be buried with full military honors. Although the exact date of the funeral has not been set it was stated that it would be held under the auspices of the Chico post of the American Legion.
Aitken, who was killed in action in France on July 25, 1918, left Chico early in 1917 with old Company A, Second California Infantry, and was the first Chico boy to lay down his life for his country in actual battle. He was killed on July 25 just as his company was going over the top to charge the enemy lines. He had only been in France a little over two weeks and had seen only a few days' actual fighting in the front line trenches.
