Virginia A. Zevely was born at Lamar, Barton County, Missouri, the daughter of James Henry Zevely and Eliza A. (Logan) Zevely. Her father was the first "elected" sheriff of Barton County, the first election being in 1858. By 1870 the family was living in Wilson Springs Township in Douglas County, Kansas.
She married Thomas P. Crawford on October 1, 1874 in Wilson County, Kansas. Their children were Charles P., Maymie M., Oren T., Maud, and Carroll Earl
Mrs. Crawford had been ill for several years and would vacation at Eureka Springs, Ark. in hopes of improving her health. Six weeks prior to her death, with little hopes of improving, she traveled to Chicago where she entered Dowie's Home of Zion, a noted health retreat. She died at the retreat October 7, 1901 and was buried the following day in nearby Zion City. Her interment is listed in "Lake Mound Cemetery" a publication of the Zion Genealogical Society.
Two children preceded her in death, Maud and Maymie.
Her siblings include Mary Zevely (Mrs. Walters/Mrs. D. P. Hines), Albert L. Zevely, Alexander H. Zevely and Julia C. Zevely (Mrs. Daniel W. Woods).
WOMAN DIES IN DOWIE'S ZION
Mrs.Virginia Crawford of Topeka, Kas.,
Expires in Michigan Avenue Retreat
Mrs. Virginia Crawford, wife of William,Crawford of Topeka, Kas., died at Dowie's Home of Zion, 1301 Michigan avenue,yesterday. Mrs.Crawford came to Chicago about six weeks ago. A post mortem examination was hel by Dr. Joseph L. Springer, the Coroner's physician, who stted after the inquest that the woman could not have survived even had she been treated by regular physicians.
