HOLD FUNERAL RITES FOR MRS. C.R. BARBOUR

Former County Superintendent of Schools Dies Suddenly At Fleming

Funeral rites for Mrs. C. R. Barbour of Phoenix, Arizona, a former Phillips County superintendent of schools and a homesteader and resident here most of her life, took place in the Baptist Church of Holyoke on Tuesday afternoon with interment following in the Holyoke cemetery.

Mrs. Barbour, who, as Miss Edna Youtsey, taught in many schools of the county for years before taking public office, died suddenly last Friday morning at about eight o'clock from heart failure at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Youtsey, at St. Peters, a small settlement south of Fleming. She had come from Phoenix about three weeks ago because of the critical illness of her mother, and her death was a shock to all of the members of her family and to her friends.

Relatives stated that she arose with a severe headache Friday morning, and after she had been left sitting alone in the kitchen of the Youtsey home while her sister, Mrs. Maude Donnelly, took care of the mother in an adjoining room, Mrs. Donnelly returned to the kitchen to find her dead.

Her husband and other relatives were summoned immediately, Mr. Barbour arriving from Phoenix Sunday evening.

Hundreds of persons came from all corners of the county and from more distant points to pay their respects to the memory of Mrs. Barbour at the services held Tuesday afternoon. The church was well filled, and masses of flowers were in evidence as expressions of the esteem in which she was held by her many friends. At the Radford Funeral Parlors, where the body lay preceding the funeral services, friends were calling constantly. Since Mrs. Barbour was a former county official, the courthouse doors were locked from 12 until 2 p.m. and the officers and employees attended the services in a body. Since her parents were unable to attend the funeral, her body was taken from the Haxtun funeral parlors back to St. Peters Tuesday so that Mr. and Mrs. Youtsey might see her once more before the funeral party came to Holyoke.

N.F. Horn, pastor of the Church of Christ, officiated at the funeral services, and musical numbers were furnished by a male quartet composed of the voices of C.A. Mowry, W.H. Rouse, Jesse Taylor and Billie Sprague. Honorary pall bearers were D.E. Hofmeister, W.C. Goddard, Gus Anderson, Ray E. Crosby, Arthur Falk and B.B. Williams of Haxtun.

Edna Youtsey Barbour was born at Gallatin, Missouri, July 18, 1887. She was educated in the Denver schools and at Denver University. Her teaching career began in the Englewood schools and she later taught at several schools in Phillips County: namely, the Holyoke and Haxtun grade schools, and the Fairfield, Liberty, Paoli and Lakeside schools. She homesteaded about eight miles southwest of Holyoke near the Lakeside school slightly more than twenty years ago. W.C. Goddard now farms this land. She served as superintendent of school in Phillips County for three consecutive terms, taking office in January 1927 and retiring four years ago.

On June 11, 1934 she was married to C.R. Barbour of Phoenix, Arizona, a former Holyoke resident, at Flagstaff, Arizona and since that time she has resided at Phoenix. She was an active member of the Holyoke chapter of the P.E.O. sisterhood at the time of her death, and she also belonged to the Royal Neighbors of America lodge of Holyoke. She had her church membership.

in the Christian church of Denver.

Mrs. Barbour is survived by her husband and her parents, three sisters, Mrs. Elma Douhan of Holyoke, Mrs. Maude Donnelly of Renssalaer, Indiana and Mrs. Myrtle Sandy of Denver, four nieces and one nephew, two step children, Howard Barbour of Safford, Arizona and Lois Barbour of Phoenix, and other relatives. Mrs. Barbour and Mrs. Douhan were twin sisters.

Mr. Barbour and son, Howard, are leaving today after having come last Sunday. They arrived in Denver from Phoenix Sunday morning, and were accompanied to St. Peters that afternoon by Mrs. Sandy and daughter, Jean, who returned to their home in Denver immediately after the funeral services. They returned to Denver with Roy Barbour and Laura Barbour-Hawes, brother and niece respectively of C.R. Barbour. They came Tuesday morning for the funeral services as did Mr. Barbour's sister, Mrs. Nell Maynard, and Mrs. Sandy's daughters, Gwendolyn and Elaine Sandy, but these three did not return to Denver until Wednesday morning.

Mrs. Alma Giltner, Mrs. Rosie Shaw and daughter and Chester and Anna Jo Martin, all of Enid, Oklahoma are other relatives from a distance who attended the funeral. Mrs. Giltner and Mrs. Shaw are sisters of Mrs. James Youtsey, while Mr. Martin is her half brother. These persons came because of Mrs. Youtsey's illness as well as because of the death of Mrs. Barbour. They arrived in Holyoke Monday night, going to St. Peters the following morning. Mrs. Donnelly came from her home in Indiana a short time ago because of her mother's illness.
