On April 17, 1853, she was united in marriage with Ezekiel Hankins, who died in 1866. To this union was born several children of whom three are living: Mrs. Henry Van Dusen of Tipton, Mo.; Mrs. Minerva Dalrymple of this city, and John Hankins of Henry.
Mrs. Hankins will be remembered by all as a beautiful example of womanly worth, kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness for others which marked her pathway as she mingled with neighbors and friends all through her life, and her devotion to her family was unceasing.
Very early in life, Mrs. Hankins accepted Jesus the Christ not only as her Saviour but in the very definite way her master. She sought by deed as well as by word to exemplify the Christian religion.
She leaves to mourn her departure three children, more than a score of grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, besides her neighbors and a host of friends.
The funeral services were held at the home of her grandson, Henry Gauwitz, yesterday. She was laid to rest in the Chillicothe cemetery.
Obituary from The Chillicothe Enquirer of May 9, 1917.
The following information is from various postings online:
Previous to Margaret marrying Ezeliel, she was married to a Mr. Gilmore. They had a daughter, Alice.
Margaret is Ezekiel's third wife. He had married Rebecca Malone on May 6, 1825, in Butler County, Ohio, and they had five children. On April 20, 1842, he married his second wife, Hannah A. Harland, and they had a daughter.
According to a descendant of their marriage, after Ezekiel’s death, Margaret supported her young family by running a boarding house in Chillicothe, Illinois. She was reportedly a good cook and it sometimes was necessary to set tables in the street when groups of Civil War veterans passed through town.
