Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until November 4, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Son of Mr. & Mrs. Claud Daniel Young who resided in Fresno, California.

Melvin served as a Fireman First Class, U.S.S. Reno (CL-96), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in California prior to the war.

The Reno, while escorting the U.S.S. Lexington (CV-16) east of the San Bernardino Strait, was hit by two Japanese torpedos on her port side fired from Japanese submarine I-41. 8 crewmen perished as a result of this attack.

Melvin was declared Missing In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
