MCFARLAND - Ruth York Penn Foster, age 88, died on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at Harmony Assisted Living Center, McFarland. She was born in Belle Pointe, Ky., on May 31, 1915, the daughter of William York and Minerva Crawford. After graduating from Berea Academy at age 18, Ruth moved to Chicago, where she lived until 2000. She then moved to Madison, to be closer to her only son and daughter-in-law. Ruth lived through the depression, the New Deal, World War II, and the continuing fight for equality. She was interested in social justice and in keeping the liberal American ideals alive. Ruth was the loving mother of David Penn and his wife, Susan Vogt of Monona. Her special delights were her granddaughter, Alicia Penn and grandson, Shanan Penn. She also had many nieces and nephews, whom she loved. Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Samuel Penn; her second husband, Sydney Foster; three brothers, Regan, Claude and Frank; two sisters, Mary May Stangle and Florence Loomer; and a sister-in-law, Della Penn Kramer. Private family services will be held. Burial will be at Shalom Memorial Park in Illinois. In lieu of flowers, love your neighbor, do something kind, do your part to make the world better. The family would like to thank the people at Harmony Assisted Living Center and Hospice for their loving, thoughtful care of Ruth through her last year. She will be missed.
