Tragic Death of Eli Yarian, a Farmer Residing in Locke.
Meagre particulars of the tragic death of Eli Yarian near Locke were received here shortly after noon. Mr. Yarian resided in the edge of the hamlet of Locke, and while cutting wood a tree fell upon him and inflicted injuries that caused death.
The deceased was about 50 years old and leaves a wife and several children. He was an uncle of Frank Yarian, of The News office.

Goshen Daily News Jan 29 1895,pg 1:
Mr. Yarian's Death.
Further details of the tragic death of Eli Yarian, which took place on the John Stauffer farm two miles east of Locke, have been received by The News. He and a man named Sawyer were engaged in felling a dead tree. It started to fall in the wrong direction, "breaking across the stump." Mr. Yarian warned Sawyer in a loud voice to watch out and took refuge himself behind a large red oak tree. This tree proved to be a death trap. Evidently, the standing red oak caught some of the big limbs of the falling tree and breaking off a dead one, the latter fell, striking him squarely on top of the head and crashing the whole of one side of his skull. Death resulted instantly, the man never speaking a word. The funeral will take place at the residence at 10 a.m. Thursday.
