Nell Yarborough Branch, 88, a retired educator, died on Friday, September 13, 2002, at South Sunflower Hospital in Indianola. Services were Sunday, September 15, at Goodman Methodist Church with burial in Hillcrest Cemetery. Rev. B.F. Lee officiated.
A native of Pickens, Mrs. Branch was born to Arthur Preston and Katie Lou Shepard Yarborough, in 1914. She attended Belhaven College and graduated the University of Mississippi, studying English and music. Upon moving to Goodman to teach music, she met and married Ras. M. Branch. After Mr. Branch's death she returned to the University of Mississippi to obtain an MBE, then remained in Goodman to teach business at Holmes High School and the Community College until her retirement in 1968. She moved to Indywood Personal Care Home in Indianola in 1998.
Mrs. Branch was active at Holmes with the sponsorship of Phi Beta Lambda honorary society, and after retirement was awarded the HCC Special Services Award. She was a member of the Goodman United Methodist Church, of the Goodman Reading Club and of the Magnolia Club, and was active in the Chi Omega alumni association. She was also involved in farming interests.
Mrs. Branch was preceded in death by her husband, Ras M. Branch, a daugher, Katherine McCain Shute, and a sister Katie Yarborough Neblett.
Survivors include a daughter, Bettye Branch Mitchell of Cleveland; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Pat Smithson, Danny Donald, Jimmy Walker, Ray Branch, Frank Branch, and Jack Cochran.
