Death: Apr. 4, 2010

Wife of Commander Richard William Bass, Jr., U.S. Navy.

Courtenay Wright was born on February 8, 1923, in Mineral Wells, TX, the daughter of William Franklin and Cliffe (Hood) Wright. She grew up in Fort Worth, where she graduated from Paschal High School as valedictorian in 1939. After studying at TCU, she received a B.A. in Government from the University of Texas, where she also met her future husband.

On June 6, 1947, Courtenay married Richard William Bass, Jr. in the chapel of the U.S. Naval Academy following Bill's graduation from the Academy earlier that day.

During their first three decades of marriage, Courtenay and Bill lived in Virginia, Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, and New Jersey. Wherever they were, she created a warm and intellectually stimulating home that always included membership in the Presbyterian Church and frequent visits to the public library. When her youngest child started elementary school, she returned to school as well. After earning a Master's of Library Science at the University of Maryland, she shared her love of books with others as the Librarian at Cunningham Park Elementary School in Vienna, VA, where she worked for thirteen years before retiring.

Courtenay and Bill moved to Annapolis, MD, in 1978. As one who loved nature, history, blue crab, and the water, Courtenay was delighted to live on the Chesapeake Bay. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church and a loving, invaluable grandmother. After she and Bill moved to Ginger Cove in 2003, she served in many volunteer roles in that community, including the library and the Ginger Cove Foundation. She was fit and engaged until she developed cancer early this year.

Courtenay Wright Bass passed away peacefully on April 4, 2010, surrounded by her family, at home in Annapolis.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Bill, and her children Dorothy Courtenay Bass (Mark Schwehn) of Valparaiso, IN; Barbara Lee Bass M.D. (Richard Marshall) of Houston, TX; Richard W. Bass (Diana Butler Bass) of Alexandria, VA; and Rebecca Bass Schott (Milton Schott) of Columbus, OH. She had nine grandchildren, including Wes Marshall and Wyatt Marshall of Annapolis.

She is also survived by her brother, David Wright of Novice, TX; loving nieces and nephews; and many friends.
