Viola Woodbury Kelsey, beloved mother, wife, sister, and teacher, was born December 24, 1912, in St. George, Utah, the third eldest of twelve sisters and two brothers born to John Taylor Woodbury, Jr. and Nimzar Gagosian Woodbury.
She passed away Dec 10, 2008. She enjoyed the fun and hard work of farm life, and attended Dixie College where she reigned as D Queen. She was an able and creative educator who taught grade school for 20 years, a profession that brought her great joy. She loved nothing more than to see a child blossom. She was an avid tap dancer, and taught dance classes as well, performing a tap dance, cane and all, at her 90th birthday party.
She married Edwin Verl Kelsey in 1941 in the St. George LDS Temple and moved to New Harmony, where they raised three children. Viola was active in New Harmony civic affairs, whether heading fund drives for charities, serving as Town Registrar for voting, participating on committees, or heading the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Equally active in the LDS Church, she held many offices, including President of the Primary, MIA, and Relief Society.
Three years before her passing, she and Verl moved to the Beehive Home in Richfield to be closer to family. She was a caring woman who always remembered everyone's birthday or special day, with a card, phone call, visit, or gift. She received a 5-year certificate for walking 800 miles a year!
She has walked on ahead of her daughter Verlene Kelsey-McKee (Ron McKee), and sons Deon (Jan) Kelsey, DVM, and Marvin (Laura) Kelsey, although she is hurrying to catch up with Verl, who got a head start in January of this year.
She also leaves grandchildren Kim (Dustin) Anderson, Kristi (Michael) Meager, Kirk (Kamie) Kelsey, Justin and Brett Kelsey, three great-grandchildren, and beloved sisters.
Interment will be in the New Harmony Cemetery. transcribed by Anonymous
