The Hunnewell Standard, Hunnewell, Missouri, Friday, October 3, 1958

Word was received here Sunday of the sudden death of Ephriam (Ephie) Henry Wood, oldest son of Mrs. Nora Sanders Wood, and the late Samuel H. Wood, former residents of the Pee Dee Community.
Mr. Wood, who became ill at his home at 804 Bird Street in Hannibal about 3:00 o'clock Sunday morning, was alone at the time. His wife was at the home of their son, Paul, caring for their four grandchildren while their mother was ill in a hospital. But leaving he was suffering from a severe case of indigestion, he called Mrs. Wood to tell her he was ill and to advise her he would come to the home of their son. When he arrived there, an ambulance was called and he was taken to Levering Hospital where his condition, diagnosed as a severe heart attack, grew steadily worse with death coming at 7:30 a.m.
Ephie was born near Warren, Missouri, August 3, 1899, where he spent his early life, and where he was married to Miss Helen Louise Armantrout in 1918. Following his marriage he moved to Hannibal where he has since lived.
In June 1939, he was employed by the board of education of Hannibal, as assistant custodian at Eugene Field School, and during the 1939-40 school year transferred to the same position at the A. D. Stowell School. Then in 1942-43 he became head custodian at Pettibone School where he continued until the 1952-53 school year when he was transferred as head custodian to Central School, where he was employed at the time of his death, serving in this association with the Hannibal school system for 19 years.
The body was removed to the Smith Funeral Home in Hannibal where it remained until noon on Wednesday and was then remove to Park Methodist church where it lay in state until the hour of funeral services at 2:00 PM. The Rev. A. C. Runge, church pastor, was in charge of funeral rites, and the remains were then taken to the Andrew Chapel cemetery for interment. Casket bearers were H. L. Rigg, Alvin Seckman, Paul Turner, A. S. Bonta, Carl Frank and Carl Knight. Music was furnished by Mrs. D. L. Chandler and Mrs. Russell Ridge, vocalists, with Mrs. E. A. Parks at the organ.
On Tuesday evening memorial services at the Smith funeral home were held by the Hannibal school teachers in recognition of Mr. Woods long record of service to the schools there. Music was furnished by Mrs. Margaret Walker at the organ, a vocal solo by the Mrs. Josephine Lyng, with Mrs. Gracille King reading the scripture, Miss Bessie Brown giving a tribute and Miss Rachel Techau offering the prayer.
Mr. Wood united with the Andrew Chapel Methodist church when a young man, later transferring his membership to the Park Methodist church in Hannibal, where he was also a member of the Men's Bible Class of the church school.
He is survived by his wife, two sons and one daughter, Ellsworth, of Lincoln, Illinois, Paul of Hannibal, and Mrs. Charles E. (Colleen) Ledbetter of Del Rio, Texas; and his aged mother, Mrs. Nora Sanders Wood of Hannibal. He also leaves 14 grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his father and two brothers, Roy, who died in 1923, and Samuel Wilson in 1953.
Attending the funeral services and burial rites from this vicinity were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Fohey and granddaughter Kathy Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Patterson, Mr. and Mrs. Harry See, and Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Couch of the Andrew Chapel community, and Mrs. Ralph Thurman and Warren G. See of Monroe City.
