MONROE CITY - Lawrence L. Wood, 87, of Monroe City, passed away Monday, June 13, 2005, at Monroe City Manor Care Center where he had been a resident for a few weeks.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 16, at Garner Funeral Chapel in Monroe City. The Rev. Steve Goughnour will officiate. Burial will be at Andrew Chapel Cemetery in Marion County.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, June 15, at the funeral home.
Mr. Wood was born Oct. 30, 1917, in Marion County to William and Zoe Davis Wood.
He was married to Lois Ruth Couch on May 15, 1941, in Hannibal. She preceded him in death May 23, 2004.
Survivors include two daughters, Zoe Wood Lyle of Jefferson City and Estella Lynn Wood of Hydesburg Home in rural Hannibal; two grandchildren, Hilary Lyle of Jefferson City and Joshua Lyle of Springfield, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Wood; and an infant brother.
Mr. Wood attended the Davis School in Marion County. He was a member and deacon of the Monroe City Christian Church. He farmed in Marion County for many years before moving to Monroe City in 1960. He started the L.L. Wood Construction Co. some 60 years ago. He built numerous homes and businesses in Monroe City and the surrounding area. He loved woodworking and was an avid quail, deer, pheasant and turkey hunter. He was a past member of the Andrew Chapel Cemetery Board and the Monroe City Shelter Workshop Board.
Memorials are suggested to the Monroe City Christian Church.
Pallbearers will be Hilary Lyle, Josh Lyle, Gene Behring, Elizabeth Heley, Robert C. Howe and Trent A. Garner.
