Marilyn Ann Wood Barkley, age 69, passed away at 10:00 p.m. on April 21st2014 at her home in Toledo, Illinois.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 25th 2014 at the Barkley Funeral Chapel in Greenup, Illinois. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the Funeral Chapel. Her remains will be buried on the family farm, The Barkley Neighborhood Cemetery, next to their dogs following the services. Someday her family will join her there.

Marilyn was born on December 13, 1944 in Mattoon, Illinois; the daughter of Harry C. and Jessie S. (Hurt) Wood. She was the beloved twin sister of Karolyn Sue Wood Cryer, whom she adored. The girls grew up on the family farm in rural Toledo, Illinois, where Marilyn and her husband resided since 1989 until her passing.

On August 31, 1968, she married the love of her life, Michael G. Barkley of Yale, Illinois at Salem United Methodist Church and together they built a wonderful life. Marilyn worked alongside her husband in the funeral business, Barkley Funeral Chapels, which they built from a dream. The desire to help their communities and relieve other's sadness was their goal. There were times that they struggled but never gave up and most certainly never on each other.

Along with Mike came three wonderful children, Debbie Lane Barkley-Maxedon (Brian Snyder) of Charleston, IL; Cynthia Diane Barkley-Moser (Craig) of St. Louis, MO; and Stephen Michael Barkley (Teresa) of Springtown, TX. These three kids were the joy of her life. The children that they then brought into her life were a favorite topic; to say she loved them dearly was an understatement. Ryan Elmore, Nicholas Elmore, Elizabeth (Libby) Barkley Moser (also known as "Sunshine") and Jordan Moser. Great Granddaughter Mia Elmore. She was proud to introduce any of these as her Grandkids, the pride and joy of them shone from her face.

Marilyn was the recipient of a beautiful gift from her sister, Karolyn, who resides in Morris, Illinois; a beautiful and beloved niece, Robin Lea Scott Smith (Randy) also of Morris and their son, Jacob.

Robin was her ‘Aunt Marnie's' sidekick during the early years of her life. Everything from riding the parade horse at the Cumberland Co. Fair as they led the race horses to the post, hanging over the backseat in Marnie's orchid '65 Chevy (no car seat laws then), singing ‘Yes, Jesus Loves Me,' making up stories to tell each other, baking cookies, walking in the woods, picking wildflowers, and gathering up pretty leaves and rocks together.

Marilyn was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church in rural Toledo and an associate member of the Georgetown United Methodist Church in Florida. She loved both of her churches and the people within those walls. To say she loved life is an understatement. She loved the natural things of life, beautiful words, horses, dogs, flowers, all Hostas and Oriental Lilies. She also loved books, painting, crafts, music (except rap) and art of most kinds. She disliked cities and the concrete that covered over the ground. Her passion was gardening. She loved sunsets and to see the sunrise over the lake that she and Mike built. She loved snow and snow skiing, loved bass fishing and shrimping with her husband on the St. Johns River. She also loved the early days of field trialing bird dogs on the plantations of Alabama with their pointer, Fast Track, while riding their Tennessee walking horses and laughing with her friends. She loved pie! She loved making pie! She loved raw oysters and fresh crab meat. She was always happy and tried to dwell on happy thoughts and times. She loved her little dogs, Tarzan and Molly, and any other dog that came into her life. She loved and admired true and honest friends, the kindness of people, the beauty and drama of storm clouds, big strong oak trees and gentle snowfalls; anything well-crafted or carved from wood, harness racing and the St. Louis Cardinals.

She loved Jesus and was never afraid during her journey to live with Him forever in Heaven.

In keeping with her wishes, memorials may be made to your favorite church in her memory or to Salem United Methodist Church, c/o Nancy McElravy, P.O. Box 127, Toledo, Illinois 62468 or Georgetown United Methodist Church, ‘Angels on Assignment,' c/o Holly Meyers, P.O. Box 142, Georgetown, Florida 32139.
