Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. First served in the Civil War as a Colonel and aide-de-camp to Missouri's Unionist Governor Hamilton Gamble. He was then appointed as Lieutenant Colonel of the 24th Enrolled Missouri Militia regiment before entering Federal service as Colonel and commander of the 11th Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. From 1862 to 1863 he served as Acting Adjutant General for the state of Missouri, which was then divided between Pro-Southern and Pro-Union forces. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithfull and meritorious services". Following the Civil War he became a well-known insurance executive in St. Louis.
