Mrs. Sarah Zerbe
Having attained the unusual age of 95 years, 2 months and 3 days, Mrs. Sarah Zerbe died May 11, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lucy Russell. Mrs. Zerbe had lived in Cedar County 72 years. With her passing we are reminded that there are not many left of those who came so early, enduring the privations of Pioneer life and laying the foundation of this prosperous community.
Services were held at the home of Mrs. Russell, Monday afternoon, conducted by Dr. E. Winslow Brown, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Appropriate hymns were sung by a mixed quartet. There was a large attendance of friends and neighbors who had known her in the early days. The following sketch of her life has been furnished which we are glad to print.
Sarah, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Wolf, was born February 2, 1828, at Pine Grove, Pennsylvanis and was united in marriage at the place of her birth April 14, 1849, to Samuel Zerbe.
They came to Iowa in 1851 and settled on a farm 6 miles south of Mechanicsville where they lived until 1875, when they moved to a place north of town. Her husband died Dec. 10, 1892. Two years later she moved to Mechanicsville which has since been her home.
There were eight children in the family. Of these three died in infancy. Three attaining adult age preceeded their mother in death. They were Amelia Echternachdt, John George Zerbe and Sarah Marker. Those surviving are Samuel Albert Zerbe and Lucy Russell both of Mechanicsville. Beside other relatives there are eighteen grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Zerbe had made her home for many years with her daughter and in this home she was most devotedly loved and cared for in her declining years.
In her Pennsylvania home she early united with the German Reformed church but did not transfer her membership when coming to Iowa. The pastor and elders of the Presbyterian church met with her and the Communion of the Lord's Supper was served and she was received into membership June 12, 1821. We have reason to believe that this confession of her faith and the consciousness of obedience to her Lord brought her much comfort and an abiding joy during these last years.
